We have a NZ client that needs archival PAL Hi8 video expedition footage digitized for professional editing on Final Cut Pro in NTSC. We are looking for a digital lab, preference Auckland area, that can do this work.

Desired workflow is to digitize tapes from a professional Hi8 Digital deck through Firewire into Final Cut Pro using the Prores422 codec (NTSC); make two copies of the digitized files onto inexpensive USB "transport" drives, like a Western Digital Elements 1 or 2TB: one drive for our client and one for us.

If your company can do this work or you know one that you can recommend, please contact me off list.

Hi Tory.

We can do this if we can track down as NTSC HI8 player.

Let me know if you have no luck with someone in Auckland. We are in Christchurch in The South Island.

We just purchased a used GVD-800 Hi8 Digital deck from B&H Photo in NYC. Sony states that this unit will play back PAL Hi8 tapes in it's LCD screen and transfer them out via Firewire for digitizing. Hopefully, this is true.

The benefit of this unit is that it will play both NTSC and PAL, but only record in NTSC.GD800 SPECS

Disappointment. Despite Sony's assurance, the GD-V800 NTSC modle DOES NOT playback PAL Hi-8 tapes. It will playback PAL miniDV tapes, if you can believe that! So, still on the hunt for a PAL Hi-8 deck or camcorder. Prefer the Sony GD-V200E (the E is for "Europe") Hi-8 Walkman. Looks just like the picture above, but without the flip up LCD screen).

Harder to find will probably be the GD-V800E, like the NTSC model in the photo with the flip up LCD screen. This PAL version CAN playback to a NTSC monitor.

If you have a PAL Hi-8 deck or camcorder, or know a source, please let me know.

Just found a GV-D200E brand new in California on eBay. Have purchased and expect delivery by this Friday. Will test and report.

Received the GV-D200E. Doesn't have a box, but has all components, including the battery. Appears and operates as brand new. Will also play NTSC tapes. Just purchased a CMD 1500 PAL-NTSC Video Converter so I can view tapes on my NTSC TV.

Tested the unit by capturing both PAL and NTSC Hi-8 tapes to Final Cut Pro 7 Log and Capture via Firewire. Just need to set Uncontrolled Device in capture settings then use Capture Now. Set capture settings to DV (PAL or NTSC according to original tape). 720x480 captures all the quality available from Hi-8 (or Digital8).
