Of Elephants and Chimera

Chicago advertising photographer Steve Grubman, along with his
usual commercial assignments, has always had a passion for animal
photography. Steve's nationally recognized work includes the
popular Chick-fil-A ads and billboards. Now, most animals
will fit easily into your studio, but this time Steve's assignment
included an animal that can make your studio look smaller.
For a recent pharmaceutical advertising campaign, Steve examined a
number of elephants, then selected one female Indian
elephant. The elephants' pal was also on set to introduce a
calm in Steve's subject. With a lot of pre-planning with all
concerned, Steve then created some amazing images. As Steve
says, "I am living in my own personal zoo".

Large subjects are not easy to light, especially in the
studio. Steve opted to go big. Using Chimera's 10x30
foot Lightbank and and several Chimera Lanterns, the shoot went off
without a hitch while bathing these large beauties in incredible
light.

Steve's animal photography has inspired a children's photo book on
animals, Orangutans Are Ticklish: Fun Facts from an Animal
Photographer, which teaches children about zoo animals.
