We were asked again by our friends at Singular Software to review another amazing product from their range of handy plugins well known for their ability to ease the life of any hard working editor. This particular piece of software is called DualEyes and its yet again a game changer for anyone working with DSLR's with separately recorded audio. Anyone working with this workflow will understand the frustration of having to sync audio from their external recorders to the footage captured from their DSLR's or similar device.
The idea behind DualEyes is to is take a master audio recording and almost instantly sync it to the footage taken from the camera or a number of cameras to create a new video file with the good external audio replacing the onboard audio from the various video devices.
As with previous products that we have tested from Singular Software there is some magic going on behind the scenes that makes this all possible. We can only guess as to how they have managed to create a software that takes two mediums from different sources and puts them together as though they were recorded on the same device. Its really hard for us to review a product that just instantly works, theres almost nothing to review! What we can say is that if you are recording audio separately from your main video recording device then this software is for you.
As far as actually using the software goes you simply input the various video and audio files via the easy to use DualEyes main screen into a new or existing DualEyes project and push the go button and let the software do its work.
Check out the video below for a hands on demonstration.
So as you can see there really isn't much to it. Just import your files and let DualEyes do the work for you. The big winners out of this are the DSLR users. With audio inherently difficult to capture the best solution is the use of an external sound recording unit. DualEyes solves the problem of syncing multiple clips the the audio file and should become an integral part of any editors toolbox.
DualEyes is available as a download from the Singular Software site for $149US and running on both Windows and OS X and installs in a matter of seconds. There's even a30 day free version to evaluate the product. DualEyes is a stand alone product and can be used with any NLE software application.
As with all Singular Software products you'll wonder how you got along without it.
